Summary
Students undertake a full-time research placement in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, or in a research institute/university laboratory, either in the UK or overseas
In this module the student will research the background to the placement and produce a written project proposal in the form of a grant application
Target Students
Honours students (Cancer Science students only).

Educational Aims
To research the background to the placement and produce a project proposal in the form of a grant application.Learning Outcomes
1. Intellectual skills
Students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of:
- the organisation, administration and communication of scientific research in their host company/institution
- the practice of research in an industrial laboratory or other commercial environment or in a research institution
- the appropriate safety standards required in a working environment
- the specialist knowledge and expertise that form the background to the placement
2. Professional / practical skills
Students should be able to plan a research project and produce a grant application that explains the aims of the project, the background to the project, the methods that will be used, the expected outcomes and value of the research, and the safety and ethical considerations of the project.
3. Transferable / key skills
Students should be able to:
- Communicate complex written information to a non-specialist audience
- Demonstrate self-management in the completion of a written project
- Show advanced levels of information technology literacy
