Summary
The module explores the relationship between musical raw materials and the realisation of their creative potential by examining a wide range of compositional techniques and musical styles. Topics include melody, scales and modes, and contrasting harmonic idioms.

Classes
- One 2-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
Each week, students receive one 2-hour seminar and one 1-hour small-group workshop. Contact hours: 33 Individual study: 165
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: Monody composition coursework: (2,300-2,500 words)
- 70% Coursework 2: Chamber ensemble composition coursework

To provide a basic grounding in a range of compositional techniques by consideration of abstract musical issues in conjunction with a range of historical and contemporary examples.Learning Outcomes
