Summary
This module will consolidate your knowledge of the fundamental building blocks of music across all periods and genres. Topics will include notation, scales and modes, harmony, rhythm and texture. Classes will comprise a weekly lecture and a weekly small group seminar.
Reassessments for this module will take the form of coursework
Target Students
Available to all Year 1 students including Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students who are at Grade 5 theory or practical standard.
Classes
- One 1-hour-30-minute seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 11 weeks
Breakdown of hours: classes – 27.5 hours; individual study - 67 hours.
Assessment
- 60% Take-home exams: 3 take-home exams
- 40% Essay: 1800-2000 word essay

Educational Aims
This module aims to develop aural awareness of harmony, melody and rhythm, and to gain proficiency in a range of music-theoretical techniques.Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, the students should be familiar with the basic techniques of music theory and harmony,
and have developed transferable critical,
analytic and interpretive skills relevant to their further study of music analysis, theory and history.
