Summary
This module continues the survey of fundamental building blocks of music undertaken in Elements of Music I. It introduces a variety of analytical theories and interpretative methods, applied to a broad range of genres and styles. The precise content may vary from year to year, depending upon available staff expertise, but typical topics include partimento, jazz harmony, and approaches to form. Classes will comprise a weekly lecture and a weekly small-group seminar.

Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
Breakdown of hours: classes - 22 hours; individual study - 75 hours. Two 2-hour drop-in slots will be scheduled for students to discuss coursework with the module convenor.
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: One essay of 2700-3000 words
- 40% Exam 1 (0-hour-50-minute): Take-home exam.

Educational Aims
To develop knowledge and a critical appreciation of the fundamental elements of tonal music in its historical context.Understanding of basic principles of harmony and motivic development.Development of transferable analytical and interpretative skills.Critical appreciation of historical theories of musical style and idea.Relate individual listening to issues in analysis and performance practice.Learning Outcomes
A) Knowledge and understanding
⦁ Familiarity with key works from a wide range of repertoire.
⦁ Generic, inter-textual and intellectual assumptions associated with that material and its criticism;
⦁ Critical understanding of principles of tonal music: simple voice leading and harmonic analysis.
⦁ Basic understanding of issues of (e.g.) genre, form, harmony, cadential structure, motivic development, figured bass, register, texture, imitative techniques, articulation, ornamentation, Affekt, tempo, dynamics, mood, topic and character.
B) Intellectual skills
⦁ Proficiency in close reading of material, in appropriate form
⦁ Ability to research contextual information and apply it to musical works
⦁ Ability to identify challenges and strengths in different analytical approaches
C) Professional practical skills
⦁ Familiarity with scholarly and analytical tools for discussing and presenting material,
including various analytical approaches, graphic analysis, and proper referencing.

⦁ Ability to carry out independent and class-based research and analysis, evidenced in summative assessment
