Summary

The basic structure of the language will be extended and reinforced through topics related to everyday life. All four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening are covered. The grammatical structures acquired in 1A will be consolidated and developed further. Students are also required to undertake a programme a programme of autonomous learning.

Target Students

First year students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree, and who have taken the previous 1A module. Beginner level in the target language: native speakers or graduates of their mother/father tongue language secondary schools are not advised to take.

Classes

NAA students and auditors are required to sit for the Listening Examination. Year 1 core students can only take 1 core language. Year 2 or Year 3 core students can take another 1A language if he/she scored 60 or above in his/her 1st core language last semester.

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Students will continue to practise the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as acquiring further basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations. Full use will be made of communicative methods. Students will further develop autonomy in language learning under the guidance of their language tutor.

A1: pronunciation; A2 Standard spelling; A3 Ab initio syntax; A4 Ab initio sentence semantics; A5 Gist comprehension and more detailed reconstruction of audio material; A6 Basic oral skills

B1 The ability to understand the standard the linguistic system both spoken and in the written form; B2 Develop an awareness of cultural specificity

C1 Preparation of short oral and written presentations; C2 Listening with discrimination in order to elicit information; C3 Reading with discrimination in order to elicit information
