Summary
This module assumes no prior knowledge of the language. It introduces the basic structure of the language through topics relating to social and everyday life in the countries where the target language is spoken. Each session will consist of a variety of activities arising from the themes and structures which underpin the course programme. Students are also required to undertake a programme of autonomous learning.
Target Students
First year students who are doing this module as a compulsory element of their degree. Beginner level in the target language: native speakers or graduates of their mother/father tongue language secondary schools are not advised to take. If pre-requisite knowledge is assumed, the school reserves the right to check qualifications and move students to another language stream where/if possible.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Year 2 or Year 3 core students can take another 1A language (10cr) if he/she scored 60 or above in his/her 1st core language last semester.
Assessment
- 30% In Class Test: In class tests – 2 times, Listening, practical usage of language (30 mins per test)
- 30% Speaking Task: Group Speaking Task (Q&A)
- 40% Written Exam: Reading and practical usage of language (AUT semester) (1 hour)
Educational Aims
Students will learn and practice the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing together with basic grammatical structures. This will enable them to manipulate the language and participate effectively in everyday social situations.Learning Outcomes
