Summary
Analysis methods applicable to engineering design including:
- Combined loading
- Strain energy methods
- Asymmetrical bending
- Thick-walled cylinders
- Finite element analysis
- Properties of Fluids
- Hydrostatic pressure and load
- Buoyancy
Case studies are presented to relate topics covered in the module to actual design situations. Practical application is taught through laboratory and design exercises.
Re-assessment
Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment. The module will be reassessed by coursework. The re-assessment exam mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.
Target Students
This module is only available to Apprentices on the Electromechanical Engineer Degree Level Apprenticeship.
Co-requisites
Modules you must take in the same academic year, or have taken in a previous year, to enrol in this module:
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: Laboratory Report
- 50% Coursework 2: Exercise Sheet
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
The first aim of this module is to build on topics in linear elastic solid mechanics, plasticity and failure, introduce relevant analysis methods for material behaviour and demonstrate the application of these methods to the design of engineering components. The second aim of this module is to introduce students to the main principles of fluid mechanics to enable students to apply these principles to solve fluid mechanics’ problems.Learning Outcomes
LO1 - Comprehend the fundamental concepts of solid mechanics and explain how engineering components of varying geometry deform/fail and, where required, explain the relationships between applied loads and the resulting stresses and strains when subjected to a range of loading types (knowledge and comprehension). (KSB K4, 5, 6)
LO2 - Describe and explain the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, as applied to problems presented within the context of an electro-mechanical engineering workplace (knowledge, comprehension and application). (KSB K6, 17)
LO3 - Apply methods of engineering analysis based on the above concepts and predict deformation and failure in various engineering scenarios including for fail-safe design (comprehension, application and analysis). (KSB K4, K5, K6, S2, S5)
LO4 - Recognise and apply an appropriate analysis technique when presented with an engineering scenario in a mechanics context paying attention to detail and error checking (comprehension, application and analysis). (KSB S2, S5)
LO5 - Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation, showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and critical assessment of results including attention to detail and error checking throughout (comprehension, application, synthesis and evaluation). (KSB S1, S2, B2, B5)
