Summary

This module will introduce students to the concepts and principles of statics, dynamics, and mechanical mechanisms, covering analysis methods applicable to the engineering design including the following topics:

Re-Assessment

Students who fail this module overall and are required to complete a re-assessment will be reassessed by retaking the failed assessment (resubmission of coursework or resit of examination). The re-assessment mark alone will be used to determine whether students satisfy progression requirements.

Target Students

This module is only available to Apprentices on the Electro-Mechanical Engineer Degree Level Apprenticeship.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to introduce students to concepts and principles of statics, dynamics, and mechanical mechanisms, and their applications to engineering systems. The learning outcomes for the Statics, Dynamics & Mechanisms module cover the assimilation of the knowledge elements of the electro-mechanical engineer apprenticeship standard, namely mechanics, structures, and mechanisms. They also develop the behaviour of quality focus and skill in modelling real-world systems:Mechanics: the fundamental laws of static and dynamic classical mechanics and their application to mechanical systems: force and moment systems, free body diagrams, equilibrium, friction, beam theory, hydrostatics, kinematics, Work-Energy and Impulse-Momentum methods, vector algebra, scalar and graphical approaches. (KSB K4)Structures: analysis and modelling for the determination of the effects of loads on physical structures, mechanisms, and their associated components: static and fatigue stress, structural failure modes, safe-life and fail-safe design, Finite Element Analysis. (KSB K5)Mechanisms: Linear mechanisms (springs, levers, links, pulleys), rotational mechanisms (universal joints, gears and cams), energy storage and controlled release mechanisms. (KSB K11)Model real-world mechanical systems efficiently (KSB S5)Quality focussed. Follows rules, procedures and principles in ensuring work completed is fit for purpose and pays attention to detail / error checks throughout activities. (KSB B5)

Learning Outcomes

Comprehend the fundamental concepts of statics and dynamics including force and moment systems, free body diagrams, equilibrium, friction, beam theory, and kinematics including Work-Energy and Impulse-Momentum methods | (KSB K4)

Apply these concepts to simplified engineering scenarios including physical structures and mechanisms, modelling real-world problem efficiently (KSB K4, K5, K11, S4)

Analyse the effects of loads on physical structures, mechanisms, and their associated components, and in which machines move and are powered by applying an understanding of basic statics, dynamics and mechanical mechanisms (KSB K5, K11, S4)

Clearly report analysis of data and engineering calculations using an appropriate level of explanation showing evidence of judgement in selecting analysis techniques and critical assessment of results, following rules procedures and principles, and paying attention to detail (comprehension, application, synthesis and evaluation) (KSB B5)

Understand the risks involved when carrying out experimental procedures and to follow appropriate health and safety instructions, understand mitigations and risk analysis. (KSB B1)
