Summary

This is a compulsory course (module) for all students studying on the MSc in Structural Engineering.  This course (module) will use the design of a tall building as a platform for students to practise and apply the skills that they have developed through the courses in the Autumn Semester.  Students will work in groups to tackle a tall building design problem based on an architect’s brief and an identified site.  Design studio sessions and a series of weekly crits will enable students to work on detailed models of the proposed solution using design and analysis software.  The scope of the project will cover the social and engineering context of the proposed tall building; the principal structural system; evaluation of loading; outline design of foundations; and presentation of the design.

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment, with any group-based components made suitable for completion by an individual.

Target Students

MSc students in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Co-requisites

Modules you must take in the same academic year, or have taken in a previous year, to enrol in this module:

Classes

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To: (i) Develop an understanding of the structural engineering design of tall buildings; (ii) Develop skills in using design and advanced analysis software to solve a challenging structural engineering design problem.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:

1. Propose a suitable structural system to meet a complex tall building design brief based on the evaluation of a range of possible structural solutions.

2. Critically evaluate the structural performance of their proposed structural system by selecting and implementing an appropriate modelling strategy.

3. Present their solution to a complex tall building design brief using the outputs from design and analysis models.

4. Work effectively as part of a design team, reflecting critically on their own contributions to the team to inform their continuing professional development.

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
