Summary

This course (module) will look into the design of specialised structural systems such as composite beams and floors, portal frames, tubular trusses, and pre-stressed concrete beams and slabs. It will also look into connection behaviour, the design of steel moment connections and sway stability of buildings. A major group design exercise will illustrate the approach to the design of complete structures.

For students requiring reassessment, this will be limited to the components which have been failed and these will be in the same form as the original assessment, with any group-based components made suitable for completion by an individual.

Target Students

Part III MEng students and MSc students in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

To develop an ability to design specialist structural systems and to use teamwork to design a complete structure based on an industrial brief.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course (module), students will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge and understanding of mathematical methods and scientific concepts, principles & theories for the detailed design of the structural steelwork systems of portal frames, composite beams, tubular trusses, pre-stressed concrete and steel connections.

2. Appreciate the role of connection behaviour on the wider structural behaviour of frames.

3. Provide lateral bracing and design against sway in buildings.

4. Propose a conceptual design solution to meet an industry standard structural engineering design brief, calculate applied loading on structures and use appropriate code of standards to determine critical forces and to carry out the detailed design of typical structural elements.

5. Present orally and in writing a design solution meeting a design brief.

This will contribute to the following programme learning outcomes (see Programme (Plan) Specifications for details):
- Knowledge and Understanding: M1
- Intellectual Skills: M3, M5
- Transferable/Key Skills: M16, M17
