Summary
This module considers:
- Analysis of the concept and scope of advanced practice, and its interface with accountability, clinical governance, autonomy, specialist practice and expert practice.
- Integration of communication and assessment skills, decision making, management and speciality specific knowledge and skills acquired during the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice apprenticeship (veterinary) programme.
- Role transition and professional identity in advanced practice.
- Legal and ethical issues underpinning advanced/autonomous practice.
- Leadership within advanced practice.
- Advanced practitioner roles in the context of the multi-disciplinary/multi agency team.
- Risk management strategies, human factors.
- UK and international veterinary policy in relation to advanced practice.
Target Students
UK registered veterinary surgeons who meet the entry requirements contained in the supplementary regulations.
Classes
Content will be delivered through webinars, e-learning, four attendance days, directed reading, and self-directed tasks. Resources to facilitate and support candidate self-directed and optional learning are also available. Attendance is non-compulsory. Activity hours: 60 hours, Tutor Led and 140 assessment preparation and assessment, Total 200 hours.
Assessment
- 50% Assessment 1: Written report outlining an evidence based background and proposed clinical practice change related to the apprentices area of clinical practice1,500 word (+/- 10%) clinical practice change report. Presentation must draw upon the clinical practice change report and discuss the implementation of the development in practice 35 mins presentation (+/- 10%).
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour): Open book examination where apprentices can bring three written case studies to the examination.

Educational Aims
This module aims to enable the integration of the learning and personal/professional development that occurs during study of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (veterinary). The module content is designed to allow you to critically explore and debate your transition into advanced clinical practice. It recognises that there are regional, national and international variations in how advanced practice roles are articulated and enacted, as well as variations across the different healthcare professions. Associated with these variants are also differing levels of professional autonomy. The module will thus enable you to explore and identify what advanced practice means within the context of your own professional practice role, and equip you to further develop your advanced clinical practice beyond the end of the module.Learning Outcomes
