Summary
VETS4058 Foundations of Professional Practice in Veterinary Physiotherapy.
This module extends throughout the first year of study.
The module covers:
• Fundamental scientific principles
• Risk assessment, first aid, basic approaches to handling
• Professional ethics, health and safety law, veterinary surgeons act and exemptions orders
• Study skills and IT skills
• Professional and peer communications
Target Students
Restricted to students registered on the veterinary physiotherapy programme only. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
- One 1-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- Two 2-hour-30-minute practicums each week for 10 weeks
- Two 1-hour lectures each week for 10 weeks
Work Based Learning: At least 15 days in year 1 seeing various aspects of animal care or performance/business. Home study: at least 8-10 hours per week
Assessment
- 25% Coursework: Client information leaflet
- 75% Coursework: Reflective portfolio
- Practical: Must complete 15 work based learning days - Must pass element

Educational Aims
The purpose of VETS4058 is to enable you to:• gain real life experience of work as a veterinary physiotherapist • recognise the close links between professional knowledge of veterinary physiotherapy and its professional practice• develop your equine and canine handling skills • broaden your understanding of the varied work in day-to-day delivery of veterinary physiotherapy• develop your understanding of medical and surgical treatments and cases in veterinary practice• develop communication skills with client, veterinary surgeons and other related professions• appreciate the importance of animal welfare • appreciate Health and Safety issues in the workplace• identify the limitations that may arise in provision of care in a commercial situation• document your experience and its relevance to future professional practiceLearning Outcomes

⦁ Critically evaluate current legal, ethical and risk related issues, including the boundaries of and implications for practice.

⦁ Conduct a risk assessment to critically evaluate treatment facilities, equipment, handler, animal and restraints.
