A mixture of lectures, practical sessions, seminars and self-directed study
Assessment
- 90% Coursework 1: Portfolio. The Portfolio must be passed for progression to year 3
- 10% Inclass Exam 1 (Practical): OSPE

Educational Aims
An understanding of the basic principles of veterinary science, including diagnostic imaging, basic communication skills such history taking, an understanding and application of methods of learning, study and assessment, an understanding of the principles and methods of critical appraisal of scientific literature, an understanding of the ethical decision making skills required of veterinary surgeons including the presentation of an ethical stance with reference to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' ‘Guide to Professional Conduct.Learning Outcomes
a. Knowledge and understanding:
At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Principles of diagnostic imaging
- Basic clinical examination
- Principles of critical review and scientific communication
- Methods of learning, study and assessment
- Ethical decision making with reference to the RCVS Guide to Professional Conduct

At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate:
- Taking a clinical history
- An application of the principles and methods of critical appraisal
- Selecting and interpreting different diagnostic imaging modalities
