Summary

The module explores a range of historical, ethical, and theological issues pertaining to women and warfare in the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel.
You'll start by looking at the Hebrew Bible's portrayals of women and the feminine, including:
•    goddesses
•    biblical queens
•    the role of women in the community.
Next, you'll move on to warfare, considering, for example:
•    the relationship between military victory and righteousness in the Bible
•    the theological implications of YHWH being a god who fights in battle
•    how Judah's greatest ever military defeat became the defining point of its theology.

Educational Aims

By the end of the module students should have1. Furthered their knowledge of the ethical thinking of the Hebrew Bible;2. Acquired an appreciation for the historical contextuality of ethical thought; and3. A deepened awareness of critical methods.

Learning Outcomes

a) Knowledge and understanding
Of the origins, development and diversity of religious thought in the Hebrew Bible; knowledge and understanding of scholarly debates surrounding the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible; and an understanding of biblical ethics as part of a wider historical and social phenomenon;

 

b) Intellectual skills:
ability to attend to, reproduce accurately, reflect on and interact with the ideas and arguments of others;

c) Professional practical skills:
confidence in conducting independent research, culminating in a substantial written paper;

d) Transferable skills:
effective oral and written communication skills, including experience in preparation for and leading group discussion.
