Summary
This module introduces students to contemporary processes, issues, debates and controversies in international and global social policy. Topics may include:
- Globalisation and social policy.
- International institutions, norms, standards and goals with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals including the threats and challenges of climate change.
- Welfare state typologies and cross-national comparisons.
- International labour mobility and migration, and the boundaries of social justice and the welfare state, including cross-national social protection policies.
- Challenges and opportunities for social policy in the Global South with a case study of China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Africa.
- Discrimination in a multicultural world.
- Good governance and national and international corruption.
- International cooperation, policy learning and policy transfer with a case study of the European Union - China Social Security Cooperation Programme.
Target Students
Available to all PGT and PGR students including subsidiary students from outside the school. Also available to postgraduate Exchange students. SOCI4085 cannot be taken with SOCI4086 or if already taken SOCI2024.
Classes
This module is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: 2,000 words.

Educational Aims
The aims of the module are to:Provide students with research-based teaching on policies, programmes, issues, debates and controversies in international and global social policy.Assist students to gain an understanding of international policy-making bodies and processes.Familiarise students with different approaches to social policy across countries and methods of cross-country comparative analysis.Provide students with the ability to critically assess evidence and to evaluate different approaches to social policy.Provide students with the ability to conduct research with analytical skills on international issues.Learning Outcomes

- Different social policies across a variety of countries.
