Summary
This module provides a general introduction to a range of key issues in the design and practice of social research. The module combines more formal taught sessions with practical exercises, some of which are group based. By the end of the module students will be equipped with the methodological and practical skills to carry out independent research using a variety of research designs and methods.
Target Students
Only available for DPP Doctor of Public Policy or DPM Doctor of Public Management students.

This module is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Educational Aims
The aims of the module are:To explore some of the major issues (epistemological, practical and ethical) involved with undertaking social research.To develop an appreciation of the factors to be considered in designing and conducting a piece of research.To examine the pros and cons of the principal research methods used in public policy and management.Learning Outcomes
a) Knowledge and Understanding
Students will have:
- Developed a critical and reflexive understanding of a range of philosophical, theoretical and methodological approaches to social research.
- A substantive and critical appreciation of a wide range of research designs, data collection methods and analytical techniques and of their application to different research settings, questions and objectives.
- Familiarity with the pros and cons of different sample designs.
b) Intellectual Skills
Students will:
- Have explored the strengths and weaknesses of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research data collection methods and be able to select those suitable for answering specific research questions.
- Have examined issues in the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.
- Have an ability to critically assess the design and methodology of research reports.
- Be able to assess the ethical implications of a piece of research.
c) Professional Practical Skills
Students will:
- Have developed the knowledge and skills that allow the student to make a contribution to professional practice, including formulating research questions and the capability to manage, conduct and disseminate research.
- Have the evaluation skills to assess the applicability of a piece of research to practice.
- Be able to make decisions about practice based on a critical assessment of research.
