Summary

This course seeks to create an overview of common sporting injuries including the epidemiology, presentation, prevention and treatment. It will enhance understanding of the aetiology, biomechanical principles and problems associated with sports injuries.  Students will review the demands and injury risks associated with specific sports and discuss the current evidence base for management.  The course will also cover the current public health issues relating to physical activity (and physical inactivity) from an epidemiological perspective. It aims to explore the intersect of changing public health issues, lifestyle and behaviour.

Target Students

MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Medicine students

Classes

Method and Frequency of Class: Sessions will encompass a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials and student led presentations.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The overall aim of this course is to integrate the knowledge of common sporting injuries and approaches to management of sporting injuries using research based evidence and current daily practice. It also will provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the relationship between physical activity, public health, epidemiology and health outcomes. The epidemiology of disease and exercise behaviour will be explored along with the understanding of the changing population demographic in the UK and globally.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

All students must be able to:
(K1) Discuss the common injuries seen in specific sports, including understanding the epidemiology, cause, clinical presentation, and prevention of sport injuries;
(K2) Understand the principals of rehabilitation and expectations of athletes following injury;
(K3) Understand the changing demographics and behaviour patterns with respect to physical activity and the impact this has on society;
(K4) Understand the epidemiological measures pertaining to physical activity measurement and related research study designs and methods appropriate for the population being assessed.

Skills:

Students will be able to:
(S1) Assess the evidence base of physical activity epidemiology;
(S2) Use an appropriate method to measure physical activity/inactivity and for exercise testing;
(S3) Utilise problem solving skills and critical appraisal of current literature to provide an educated choice of management options of a wide range of sporting injuries.
