Summary
This course is aimed at providing the skills needed for designing, undertaking and analysing data from the research project.
It will involve the student undertaking a research project on a topic relevant to Sports and Exercise Medicine. Suitable project topics will be proposed by members of the MSc teaching staff. Students are also free to make their own suggestions for projects, which may or may not be deemed acceptable. A project supervisor will be appointed for each project. This allocation is made at the start of the academic year and the student is then expected to work on the project throughout the year (the final year for part time students).
Internationalisation is central to this course. All students are able to suggest their own topics for research projects, which means overseas students have the option to collect data from their home countries if appropriate.

Classes
This module is not taught per se, but there are a number of tutorials during the year to help keep students on track. Also students have supervisory meetings with their supervisor to guide them during their project; students are expected to initiate these meetings

- 65% Dissertation: 6,000 word Dissertation in medical journal paper style
- 35% Poster Presentation: Poster presentation

Educational Aims
The aim is to enable students to undertake a high-quality research project at MSc level. To select a suitable topic within Sports and Exercise Medicine and define a feasible research question and aims and objectives for the project. To summarise the relevant peer-reviewed scientific literature and evaluate the evidence critically in relation to the chosen research question. To understand the ethics of research and the regulatory approval process and to obtain the appropriate ethical/regulatory approvals to be able to undertake the study.To design and conduct a research study which will effectively answer the research question. To undertake the study with professionalism, integrity and diligence.To record and collate the research results appropriately and to be able to undertake and interpret descriptive and analytical statistical analysis of research data.To draw appropriate conclusions from the project results and relate them to the original aims and objectives and current knowledge. To organise and present a formal written dissertation of the project in conventional scientific style. To be able to defend the work in a formal viva examination.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding:
• To develop and consolidate students’ knowledge and understanding of the research process in sports and exercise medicine;
• To be able to identify appropriate gaps in the Sports and Exercise Medicine literature that warrant a novel research study, defining a suitable research question;
• To be able to design and conduct a Sports and Exercise Medicine research project;
• To understand the importance of PPI throughout the lifecycle of a research study;
• To be able to critically appraise the research literature relevant to their research area;
• To understand the ethical constraints in research involving human participants, including research data management;
• To undertake analysis and interpretation of research data using appropriate parametric and non-parametric statistical tests or using suitable qualitative methodologies.
