Summary

The module will cover the relationship between physical activity and health with respect to both prevention and treatment of disease. In particular the impact of physical activity on specific medical conditions will be covered. Encompassing internationalisation, physical activity and health in both the UK and globally will be addressed.

Target Students

MSc/PGDip Sports and Exercise Medicine and MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Medicine students

Classes

Teaching takes place in formal lectures, with internal and external specialist lecturers and in small group format – with informal seminars undertaken by the students with supervision from the course convenor.

Assessed by end of designated period

Educational Aims

To provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the relationship between physical activity, disease and health outcomes and the impact these conditions may have on the ability to exercise. It will enhance the student’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge to the practical situation, and to critically appraise recent literature on sport and exercise medicine practice.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
Students will have an understanding of the impact that common medical conditions have on the ability to exercise.

Students will have an understanding of how physical activity and exercise may prevent and modify disease.

Students will be able to advise the general population and people including those with specific conditions or illnesses with respect to suitable physical activity and exercise programmes.

Skills:
To assess and apply the evidence base of sport and exercise medicine practice.

Communicate effectively in writing. Critical thinking and evaluation.
