Summary
The course will introduce cognitive behavioural; systemic; psychodynamic and behavioural approaches to psychological therapy. Sessions will describe the development and application of theory within each approach and students will be taught to use one theoretical model that is used to formulate clinical problems, again from each approach, and often including group work. In addition, the online learning units will deliver material on four core concepts within Clinical Psychology: formulation; critical thinking; reflective practice and the scientist practitioner.
Target Students
MSc in Mental Health: Research and Practice students, PG Diploma in Mental Health: Research and Practice students, PG Certificate in Mental Health: Research and Practice students.
Classes
- One 2-hour un assigned each week for 3 weeks
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 3 weeks
- One 6-hour lecture each week for 5 weeks
Teaching will take place weekly over 5 weeks in semester 1. There are five lectures in total and three online learning units with accompanying tutorials.
Assessment
- 30% Assessment 1: 1 x 1,000 word reflective report
- 70% Presentation 1: 1 x assessed presentation (30 minutes)

Educational Aims
The course aims to enhance students’ understanding of core concepts and models within the field of clinical psychology. The teaching content will introduce students to the conceptual frameworks that underpin the profession and will deliver theoretical overviews of some key approaches to therapy.Learning Outcomes

• Understanding of the controversies surrounding the diagnosis and treatment options of mental health disorders
• Appreciation of the cognitive and affective processes or mechanisms proposed to underlie mental health disorders
