Summary

This module will provide clinical, social and psychosocial perspectives on dementia. The overarching theme is ‘quality of life’: each session will consider this from a variety of perspectives: epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment; neuropsychological assessment; working-age dementia; representations in the media; the use of arts and music interventions; developments in design of environments and smart technology; community services, both in cities and rural areas; legal protection and human rights; the experiences of family and professional care-givers.

The underlying philosophy of the module views dementia as a disorder unfolding across several years of an individual’s life. There are many areas for potential enquiry and research that require a range of approaches in order to improve our understanding of the condition and provide help to people with the condition and their families.

Students will be able to engage in discussions with lecturers from many departments across the University as well as experienced practitioners in the field. Some sessions may include short contributions from people with dementia and their carers when possible. In addition, a selection of videotaped interviews and other media on various contemporary topics will be made available.
