Summary

This module seeks to extend the appreciation of both qualitative and quantitative research methods in psychology.  It considers:

a) some specialised methods of gathering data in psychological research, eg experimental methods, focus groups, diary studies, direct observation, use of the Internet
b) epidemiological research methods
c) further multivariate analysis
d) further qualitative analysis, eg narrative analysis and IPA

Target Students

Students registered on MSc Psychological Research Methods degree or other pg degrees in I-WHO or Psychology/ CHS.

Contact time: 20 hours (workshops), 6 hours (Seminars)self-managed learning groups: 20 hoursPersonal study: 154 hours

Educational Aims

The module provides an insight into some more advanced or specialised techniques of data collection, organisation and analysis in applied psychological research.

Learning Outcomes

Transferable skills include: Cognitive Skills: problem-solving, analysis & synthesis, critical evaluation, creative thinking, independent learning and group learning. Professional Skills: team work, oral and written communication, presentation skills, professional/ethical conduct. Technical Skills: expanding knowledge using library and internet-based facilities, bibliographic and information technology skills.
