Summary
This module introduces a range of data collection and analysis methods. It aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required for health surveillance and the identification of emerging risks, as well as the design, implementation and evaluation of organisational interventions.
Target Students
Students within Institute of Work, Health and Organisations taking the MSc or PG Diploma in Workplace Health
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: An online workbook in the Moodle module page, comprised of a combination of quantitative and qualitative short answer questions.

Educational Aims
AIMS: The module aims to provide students with the research methodology knowledge and skills necessary for applied research in the organizational setting. OBJECTIVES: On completion of this module, students should be able to: i) understand and use a range of data collection and analysis techniques suitable for organizational researchLearning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
- the theoretical and applied basis of occupational health with a particular emphasis on psychosocial issues;
- the application of current knowledge to understanding occupational health in different contexts e.g. personal, social, work and organisational and cultural;
- the principles of occupational health;
- the principles and practice of workplace health promotion;
- the principles and practice of ergonomics (human factors);
- contemporary issues in organisational psychology and behaviour;
- the role of the occupational health and safety practitioner.
Intellectual skills:
- analyse and interpret evidence relevant to the management of occupational health;
- display the skills of evidence-based problem-solving and critical reasoning;
- demonstrate independence of thought appraise critically and evaluate.
Practical/professional skills:
- oral and written communication and presentation;
Transferable skills:
- communicate effectively in writing;
- communicate effectively by oral presentation;
- retrieve information from databases and the Internet, reflect upon and assess their own progress, strengths and weaknesses, problem-solve in relation to occupational health and safety issues.
