Summary
This module is an intensive 3-day workshop delivered at the University's Jubilee Campus that explores a range of contemporary health-related issues for today's workforce, and offers strategies for their management. Topics usually include the ageing workforce, drug and alcohol misuse, shift work, illness deception (malingering), gender issues in occupational health, work-life balance, non-standard working environments, migrant workers, post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. It includes expert guest speakers with national reputations in their areas. It will include interactive sessions on difficult scenarios and how to tackle them. It provides an introduction to the scientific literature on the causes and correlates of these problems, and to the science of intervention. or those students who cannot attend in person, and as revision for attendees, all major teaching sessions are recorded and made available on-line in the Virtual Learning Environment. The assignment concerns an evidence-based account of a contemporary or emerging challenge to workplace health and wellbeing, and an outline of the implications for managers. Students may choose their own topic, in discussion with the module convenor.
Target Students
Students within the Institute of Work, Health and Organisations registered on the MSc or PG Diploma in Workplace Health and well-being (Workplace Health and well-being Programme).The module may also be studied as a stand alone course, and is be suitable for experienced practitioners who desire an introduction to contemporary issues workplace health.

- Three 8-hour workshops each week for 3 weeks
22 February 2016 – 24 February 2017 – 3 x full day campus-based workshop plus follow up emails and discussions on an individual basis
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: 1 x 5,000 WORD ESSAY

Educational Aims
The module aims to provide students with knowledge about contemporary work-related health issues. Objectives: On completion of this module, students should be able to: adopt a critical approach to contemporary issues in workplace health and well-being illustrate this knowledge with reference to several contemporary workplace health issues discuss practical implications for managers and workplace health practitioners.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding:
- the theoretical and applied basis of occupational health psychology with a particular emphasis on current and emerging workplace health issues
- the application of current knowledge to understanding occupational health in different contexts e.g. personal, social, work, organisational, cultural and societal
- the role of the occupational health and safety practitioner and line manager in the supervision of contemporary health issues at work
