Educational Aims
Providing an insight into some more advanced or specialised research methods used in psychological research. Provide information about limitations, advantages and disadvantages of using such methods. Providing information about the type of data collected using such methods, giving an outlook on how to analyse the data and interpret findings. Providing examples as well as some training to critically judge relevant research articles.Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
-Have a better overview over the methods arsenal that modern psychological research provides. Given both the trends over recent decades and years, their impact as well as the implied challenges in understanding, this module has a stronger focus on quantitative methods from experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience
-Read, understand, and critically judge the majority of mainstream research articles using these methods; in particular, be able to evaluate whether the conclusions drawn by the authors are likely valid or within the scope of the used research methods (emphasising both strengths and weaknesses of the methods)
-Better understand which research methods might be most useful to address their own research questions, e.g., for their MSc project or potential subsequent PhD projects
