Summary

This module is designed for students on research degrees (e.g. PhD) in behavioural sciences (e.g. Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Sociology) to equip them with professional skills in their field. We will cover topics such as:

Gaining ethics approval for your research

Ethical conduct in science (credit, authorship, data fabrication)

Reputation management (social media etc.)

Graphical representation of data

Effective use of authoring tools (Word, Latex, referencing software)

Creating a poster

Teaching will be delivered via:20 x 1hour seminars in the School (these are already organised and presented)5 x 2hour workshops in particular skills

Educational Aims

To provide research students in behavioural sciences with formal training on topics that are important for their future careers, such as how to convey their scientific theories, the publication process, good management of data and good ethical conduct.

Learning Outcomes

Improved skills in: data presentation, research ethics and professional ethics, manuscript preparation, academic publication system (e.g. peer review), conference poster presentation
