Summary
This course introduces students to some commonly used psychological assessments and their respective components through popular case studies. The course will discuss the theoretical underpinnings of the assessment tools and issues related to the practices involved.
Target Students
BSc Psychology / BSc Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience students at UNM. The module would also be suitable for psychology postgraduate research students.
Classes
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
In class, case studies and components of assessment tools will be discussed. Students will be given opportunity to have critical group discussions and point out issues observed from the case studies in some of the lectures. Students will be presenting some of the discussion outcomes as well to showcasing their understanding and intellectual skills.
Assessment
- 30% Coursework: 2000 words
- 70% Exam (2-hour): 2 hour exam (MCQs and Short-note Question)

Educational Aims
To provide students with some basic knowledge and understanding of existing assessment tools, as well as recent issues relating to the practices. To educate students about the purpose and limitations of some commonly used assessment tools. Lastly, to familiarize students with the practice etiquettes of assessment tools.Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge and understanding: Students will understand the purpose, ability and limitations of psychological assessments.
- Knowledge and understanding: Students will recognize and identify multiple commonly used assessments, used in various areas (i.e. educational, clinical conditions, neuropsychological etc.).
- Intellectual skills: Students will have the ability to interpret some assessment outcomes and criticize inappropriate practices according to the assessment etiquettes.
- Transferable skills: Students will develop critical thinking skills especially on evaluating the use of assessments and assessment tools in different settings.
