Summary
The lectures will cover advanced and current topics associated with ASD including the changing diagnostic criteria for autism, whether the prevalence of autism is increasing, savant skills, cross-cultural issues. Students will be required to actively participate in the lectures by discussing journal articles, and preparing short informal presentations for some of the topics.

- 50% Coursework: Group Debate
- 50% Exam 1 (1-hour): 1 Essay Question

Educational Aims
To provide students with in-depth up-to-date knowledge about issues in relation to research on Autism Spectrum Disorders and some associated conditions e.g. ADHD, Fragile X syndrome.Learning Outcomes
1) Knowledge and Understanding - Students will develop knowledge of a range of up-to-date theories of autism and related research.
2) Knowledge and Understanding – Students will develop knowledge about some of the major contemporary issues in the wider field of autism, such as with tools for diagnosis, diagnostic criteria, and intervention.
3) Intellectual skills – Students will be able to critically evaluate psychological research and theories.
4) Intellectual skills – Students will quickly comprehend, summarise and discuss research articles
5) Professional/practical skills – Students will be able to express and communicate complex ideas and theories using technical language.
6) Professional/practical skills – Presentation skills
7) Transferable skills – Computer and word processing software usage.
8) Transferable skills - Undertaking self-directed study, including reviews of literature and project management in order to meet desired objectives.
