Summary

This module will focus on clinical psychology. Several psychiatric disorders will be discussed. Furthermore, the diagnostic process and interventions will be covered.

Target Students

Psychology students at UNMC

Classes

The lectures will cover several psychiatric disorders. The DSM-5 will be used as the main guideline. The diagnostic process will be covered and practiced, including neuropsychological examination, and IQ testing. The workshops will include role plays in small groups. It is essential that all students actively participate in these role plays.

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

To provide students with knowledge about psychiatric disorders, such as depression, schizophrenia, developmental disorders, and personality disorders. Students will be challenged to think about how the diagnostic process works, understand that there are many individual differences, and that diagnosing is a challenging process.

Learning Outcomes

1)    Knowledge and Understanding about (some of the) psychiatric disorders as described in the DSM-5
2)    Knowledge and Understanding about (the challenges within) the diagnostic process
3)    Professional/practical/Intellectual skills – Students will be able to critically evaluate case studies and evaluate which underlying problems might be present
4)    Professional/practical/Intellectual skills – Students will be able to think about possible interventions for specific psychological problems. 
5)    Professional/practical skills – Students will have a brief introductory experience with communication techniques
