Summary
In this full year module, students work under supervision to design, carry out and report a research project in an area of psychology. Projects typically involve the collection of original empirical data, but studies employing computational modelling of empirical data or secondary data analysis (i.e. meta-analysis) are allowed.
Target Students
Final year Single Honours BSc Psychology and BSc Cognitive Neuroscience
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 8 weeks
- One 6-hour practicum
In addition to the Project supervision meetings with your supervisor, students will also need to attend some additional sessions which are designed to support them in their project work and the assessment for the module.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: Final-Year Project Report (max 8,000 words)
- Coursework 2: Interim proposal. The project grade will be reduced by 5% if this is not completed satisfactorily
- Presentation 1: End of year oral presentation. The project grade will be reduced by 5% if this is not completed satisfactorily
Assessed in both autumn & spring semest
Educational Aims
On completion of the module, students should be able to: (i) define a research question and relate this to relevant empirical and theoretical literature; (ii) choose appropriate methodologies and formulate testable hypotheses; (iii) plan and carry out a study efficiently; (iv) demonstrate awareness of ethical issues in psychological research and adhere to appropriate standards; (v) show an appreciation of research design and statistics and apply appropriate analytical techniques; (vi) present findings effectively, discuss their implications in relation to previous work and form appropriate conclusions.Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students should be able to
(i) Summarise an area of research
(ii) Derive a research hypothesis from that area
(iii) Design an experiment/survey/field study to test that hypothesis
(iv) Analyse the results of the experiment/survey/field study
(v) Write a report following the recommended format.
