Educational Aims
To provide students with an understanding of the findings of, and theories derived from, experimental studies of human development. To provide knowledge about: research methods in human development; issues in the field of human development; theories of language acquisition; the development of phonology, lexical representations, word meaning, and literacy; the importance of social referencing in early word acquisition; the development of perception, representation and reasoning processes; the development of children's theories of mind; atypical socio-cognitive development in people with autism; early social and communicative development. To encourage critical appraisal of models and experimental evidence. To encourage high-quality written communication skills.Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of theories of human development and how these may be applied in the real world;
2. Demonstrate an ability to apply developmental psychological theories to explain behavioural processes
3. Demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to critique, research methods and paradigms that are used in the study of human development;
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the use of empirical evidence and hypothesis testing in developing the disciplines of developmental psychology.
