Summary
This module considers a range of qualitative approaches suitable for psychologists. Students will be introduced to the theoretical and philosophical underpinnings and practical application of a number of qualitative research methods. The teaching will combine lectures, workshops, student-led seminars and self-directed study. Specific topics included will be: - developing qualitative research questions -consideration of philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of qualitative methods - choosing an appropriate qualitative method - the methods available - ethical issues in qualitative research - evaluation and critical appraisal of qualitative research evidence

Educational Aims
The module introduces students to the theoretical, philosophical and conceptual underpinnings of qualitative approaches to research and considers when such approaches are appropriate in applied psychology and mental health research. A number of qualitative methods will be introduced, including thematic analysis, content analysis, interpretative phenomenological analysis, grounded theory, narrative analysis. These methods will be considered in relation to a range of applied research topics. By the end of this modules students will have developed:- A working knowledge of models, approaches and methods used in applied psychological research.- An ability to critically appraise qualitative research methodologies and findings in the field of applied psychology.- Direct experience of:o Developing questions for a semi-structured interviewo Undertaking a semi-structured interviewo Transcribing and analysing interview datao Writing a report of the data analysiso Writing reflexivelyLearning Outcomes
