Summary
The module is in several parts. The first part focuses on theories of learning and the application of these to training development and design in organisations. Issues relating to training needs analysis, training transfer and evaluation of training are also considered. The second part of the module focuses on the design and operation of performance appraisals in organisations, with particular emphasis on fairness in appraisals and a critical evaluation of the use of 360 degree feedback. Using case studies and organisational scenarios students will consider the practical aspects of developing and delivering training programmes and appraisals in organisations.The final part examines organisational learning from a strategic perspective and organisations from a strategic learning perspective. It is based on the work of Peter Senge (The Fifth Discipline 1990) and also incorporates other developments in the field of organisational learning and knowledge management.
Target Students
Any PG-T students from FASS or FOSE, subject to their home programme recognising the module.
Assessment
- 50% Essay: 2500 words
- 50% In-class Exam
Learning Outcomes
-Understand of the main issues relating to the design, provision and evaluation of training in the workplace- Discuss the main issues in individual development - Be aware of barriers to organisational learning and how learning might be managed more effectively - Be aware of and have practised techniques for thinking more strategically about the future Transferable skills include: Cognitive Skills: problem-solving, analysis & synthesis, critical evaluation, self-evaluation, independent learning and group learning. Practical Skills: time management, library research, computer literature searches, IT and data analysis. Professional Skills: team work, oral communication, written communication, professional/ethical conduct and client-focused reporting.
