Summary
The module has a dual focus of:
i) the concept of strategy, especially the relationship between organisational and HR strategy
ii) the management of workplace diversity.
It covers:
- strategy as positioning: Environmental analysis, industry analysis and generic strategies; the resource based view of the firm; resources and capabilities; core competencies, strategic intent and corporate imagination
- different models of strategic human resource management, HRM practices, International strategic human resource management.
- the history of the changing workforce and the increasing interest in managing diversity at work
- the concepts of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination will be examined and the challenges to successful diversity management
- the global context for diversity management
- a social psychology perspective on culture and communication and both within-group and inter-group relationships.
The module uses real-world case studies and organisational scenarios throughout students will develop problem-solving skills relating to organisational strategy, Human Resource strategy and managing diversity at work. Students will also gain practical skills in the critical evaluation of real-world initiatives. This module will be assessed by a group presentation and two pieces of coursework.

Any PG-T students from FASS or FOSE, subject to their home programme recognising the module.

- 60% Coursework 1: 4000 words - Essay
- 10% Coursework 2: 500 words - Refection on Learning
- 30% Presentation 1: Group presentation

Educational Aims
This module has four main aims:1) To provide an introduction and understanding of the nature of strategic management with particular focus on the issues of strategy formulation and implementation.2) To equip participants with the skills of strategic and critical thinking.3) To provide a knowledge base in relation to managing the diverse workforce and promoting inclusive workplaces4) To offer a platform for developing practical skills relating to the evaluation of real-world diversity initiatives..On completion of this module, students should be able to:a) subject the concepts of strategic management to critical analysis;b) analyse the environment facing organisationsc) formulate competitive and development strategies drawing on relevant concepts and taking into account broader stakeholder issuesd) demonstrate an awareness of the factors that must be considered in developing an effective human resource management strategy.e) understand the main issues relating to workplace diversity from historical, contemporary and world-wide perspectivesf) ) discuss the main issues and challenges in applying diversity management to real-world situationsg) critically evaluate both theory and practice relating to workplace diversityh) evaluate real world diversity initiatives in relation to their content, process, outcomes and theoretical foundation.Learning Outcomes
