Summary
This module provides an introduction to the field of applied psychology, covering general topics such as the subdisciplines of psychology, real-world applications and research methods employed in psychology. Specifically, the topics covered include theoretical foundations in applied psychology, psychology in industrial and business settings, health psychology, forensic psychology and applied social psychology.
Target Students
1st year students in BSc Applied Psychology & Management Studies; 1st year and above Business School students, 1st year and above BSc Psychology students There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice. This Module has been identified as being particularly suitable for first year students, including those from other Schools.
Classes
- One 2-hour tutorial each week for 3 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 13 weeks
Introduction to Applied Psychology is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of: (i) historical building blocks of Applied Psychology and key sub-disciplines and careers in applied psychology; (ii) research methods used in applied settings, including exploring some findings and (iii) problem solving in applied psychology and its relevance in business management.
Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2 hours exam

Educational Aims
This module introduces students to the field of Applied Psychology. It is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of:1.Historical building blocks of Applied Psychology2.key sub-disciplines in applied psychology;3.careers and work activities in psychology – as well as in applied settings;4.research methods used in applied settings, including exploring some findings;5.problem solving in applied psychology and its relevance in business managementLearning Outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to:
1. Recognise the theoretical underpinnings within areas of research and practice in applied psychology;
2. Understand how theory and research can be used to generate practical advice and interventions in everyday life;
3. Display the cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis - including the ability to identify assumptions and define terms;
4. Strategically apply applied psychology models to real-world problems, business and other social phenomena;
5. Be equipped to conduct research into applied psychology and/or business and management issues, either independently or as part of a team;demonstrate self-awareness, openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people, cultures, business and management issues and touse effective oral and written communication skills in varying contexts.
