Summary
This module will explore the use of physics-based techniques to gain insight into complex molecular systems of biological relevance. Physics has made significant contributions to our efforts of understanding the molecular principles of life. In particular, physics plays an important role in measurements of the complex structure of molecules of biological importance and their mutual interactions and dynamics. Topics covered in this module include:
- Introduction into the important classes of complex biomolecules.
- What are the underlying principles that make molecules to acquire a functional 3-dimensional structure?
- How can the molecular structure be measured?
- Motion on the molecular level and molecular motors.
- Measurements of molecular forces and distances.
In studying the physics underpinning this interesting area of modern research where chemistry, biology and physics all overlap, we will draw on principles derived from quantum mechanics and statistical physics to develop an understanding of the biomolecular world.
Target Students
