Summary
This course is designed to provide a baseline of Health Psychology knowledge and understanding to support the transition from foundation level to a degree in health sciences.
This course considers:
• Context and perspectives in Health Psychology including the Biopsychosocial Model of Health
• Chronic conditions
• Promoting health, wellbeing and health related quality of life
• Understanding, predicting and changing health behaviours
Target Students
Level 0 foundation health science students.
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Presentation: 15 minute individual poster presentation with 5 minutes of questions
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
To develop students’ understanding and knowledge of Health Psychology and its application across a variety of health care professional roles. To consider how biology, psychology, science, behaviour and social context can influence health and illness. To place focus on the promotion of health as well as the treatment of illness and disease. To understand how and why individuals react, cope and recover from illness.Learning Outcomes

Describe the Biopsychosocial model of health and other theories, models, and perspectives in health psychology
Understand the role of health psychology interventions when managing chronic conditions.
Consider how health care professionals can promote health and wellbeing behaviours that impact on health-related quality of life.
Develop an appreciation of the challenges in predicting and changing health behaviours when applying behaviour change models.

Consider the role of measurement and communication in Health Psychology.
