Summary
This course is designed to provide a baseline level of biosciences knowledge and understanding to support the transition from foundation level to a degree in health sciences. This course builds on the knowledge gained from the foundation to biosciences module.
This course considers:
• The structure and gross anatomy of the nervous and endocrine systems
• Compares the role of nerves and hormones in the body
• The importance of homeostatic control and negative feedback loops within the body
• The structure and function of the digestive system
• The process of excretion
• The importance of nutrition and diet in relation to health
Target Students
Level 0 foundation health sciences students
Classes
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Assignment: 2000 word written assignment
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
To develop students’ understanding and knowledge of biological communications within the body, with a focus on the nervous and endocrine systems. The importance of homeostatic control within the body is considered; specifically the regulation of blood glucose control, temperature and osmoregulation. The module will also facilitate deeper understanding of the digestive system and the process of excretion. The importance of nutrition and diet is considered in relation to health.Learning Outcomes
Intellectual Outcomes
- Discuss the structure and function of the nervous and endocrine systems and compare their roles in homeostasis.
- Discuss the structure and function of the digestive system.
- Discuss the process of excretion.
- Consider the impact of nervous system disease, hormonal imbalance, and poor nutrition on health.
Professional / practical skills
- Development of written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills to support progression onto a health professions degree programme.
Transferable / key skills
- Demonstrate and develop time management skills.
