Summary
This course considers a critical and philosophical review of the forms of evidence that underpin professional practice in health and social care. The rationale and evidence for evidence-based practice will be analysed and its impact on practice evaluated, including an examination of the barriers to using evidence in practice. The course will consider a range of research areas:
- The principles of critical, narrative and systematic literature review;
- Issues in the application of clinical guidelines and protocols;
- Techniques for auditing/evaluating services and policies;
- The process of generating evidence through empirical research;
- Qualitative and quantitative research paradigms and methods.
Target Students
Registered healthcare professionals, specifically aimed at physiotherapists but would be relevant for any healthcare professional working within this speciality.
Classes
A combination of blended learning activities, independent guided learning lectures and small group tutorials (up to 200 hours).
Assessment
- 100% Assignment: Written assignment of up to 3,000 words.

Understand and be able to critically evaluate a range of research methodologies and how these apply to the development of a research study including consideration of philosophical and ethical aspects of research.
Synthesise knowledge and principles of research governance and ethics and how this applies to study design.
Development of reflexivity and clinical reasoning in applying research findings to practice.
Develop effective verbal and written communication skills to critically present research and effectively disseminate research findings.
