Summary
This course aims to introduce the broad concepts of business management skills and initiative lead learning objective setting/achievement. The student is facilitated in identifying relevant business management knowledge needs by working in a small group to develop a business proposal and business plan. i.e. private practise, bidding for both commissioned services and public service departmental development. The rationale for the skills required is explored in light of current NHS health, social enterprise initiatives and the private practitioner. Informed discussions are encouraged to compare the management of healthcare services within the public, private and sporting sectors, how these may differ or be modified according to development and skill requirements common to both. The role of business management skill within both sectors will be actively developed with practical exercises.Target Students
Physiotherapy and Sport Rehabilitation students.
Classes
A combination of lectures, tutorials, blended learning and seminars (up to 100 hours).
Assessment
- 100% Presentation: A group presentation, of a business proposal, is delivered/presented to a panel of academics, healthcare providers and industry sector representatives who have facilitated on the course. 20 minute presentation and 10 minutes for questions.

The course aims to develop some basic key skills in marketing, finance, legal and management topic areas within the private, public and sporting sector.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
Have an understanding of the basic key issues associated with setting up and running both small business and new public sector health and social enterprises.
Develop basic tools/skills required to start a small business within the wider healthcare service.

Analyse the impact of their own value judgments upon CPD and legal frameworks when working in the private sector.
Professional Practical skills
Adapt, and develop further, existing problem solving skills to private and public sector management issues.
