Summary
This elective module is a compulsory component of the clinical education programme occurring at the final stage of the undergraduate course just prior to graduation. It is intended to act as a period for development and consolidation of knowledge and professional skills to assist in the transition from student to newly qualified physiotherapist. To this end the emphasis is on developing the clinical autonomy of a professional practitioner which is expected of a qualified physiotherapist. The student selects a clinical area of personal interest that is approved by the academic team. The student is required to arrange a placement so utilising their management and communication skills. This is a pass/fail module.

Educational Aims
To extend and deepen the students’ range of professional and therapeutic skills. To encourage the development of professional autonomy in order that supervision can be replaced by discussion and consultation. To give students the opportunity to consolidate clinical skills in an area of particular interest, or to gain experience in a specialised unit or practice overseas.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding:
i Justify the appropriate assessment procedures with reference to evidence based knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology in relation to dysfunction of the neuromuskuloskeletal and cardiorespiratory systems.
ii Demonstrate the ability to plan, carry out, modify/progress and evaluate therapeutic management in the context of the patient's (and carer's) emotional, psychological and cultural needs.
iii. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of socio-economic factors on health and treatment outcomes.
B.Intellectual Skills:
i Critically evaluate the role, benefits and limitations of physiotherapy with reference to current evidence based practice.
C.Professional practical skills:
i Demonstrate the ability to plan, carry out, modify/progress and evaluate therapeutic management, with particular reference to activities of daily living.
ii Write concise and accurate ongoing medical records
D. Transferable (Key) Skills:
i Recognise personal limitations and seek appropriate guidance and advice.
ii Demonstrate effective time management and appropriate prioritisation skills.
iii Communicate effectively and appropriately, verbally and in-writing, with patients, carers and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
