Summary
This course develops the understanding of normal child development up to the age of sixteen. It has a broad base and includes intellectual, physical, emotional and social aspects of development. The student is then introduced to common paediatric conditions and discusses pathology, aetiology. The rationale for therapy is explored in light of current evidence based practice. Informed discussions are encouraged to compare the management of conditions that occur both in children and adults (such as head injury, cancer, burns, fractures, soft tissue injuries, asthma) and how this may differ/be modified according to age and development. The role of paediatric clinical practice is studied within the context of these conditions and the multi-disciplinary team.
