Summary
This course considers:
- Epidemiology and risk in Sport;
- The various roles of the Medical Team members in the Sports Environment: Sports Physician, Physiotherapist, Psychologist;
- Organisation in Sport;
- Issues and practical techniques specific to the sports environment: Drugs in sport, Taping for sport, Massage for sport;
- Sports injuries/conditions by region: ACL injury and rehabilitation;
- Assessment and management of lower limb injuries.
Target Students
Level 3 BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy students.
Classes
- One 7-hour lecture each week for 7 weeks
A combination of lectures, tutorials, blended learning and seminars (up to 100 hours).
Assessment
- 100% Presentation 1: Individual presentation 20 mins (15 mins and 5 mins questions).

Educational Aims
To introduce undergraduate students to the discipline of Sports Medicine. Students will gain an understanding of the role of the physiotherapist within the context of sport, as well as the roles and perspectives of various other members of the multidisciplinary team. Additionally, the subjects of injuries and medical conditions in sport will be addressed in detail.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of assessment/treatment techniques for a wide variety of sports injuries, including their underlying pathologies, and causative factors and psychological factors.
Demonstrate knowledge of the roles of the physiotherapist and other members of the multidisciplinary team within sport and understand the psychological factors associated with sports injury.
Develop your theoretical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills in the diagnosis and rehabilitation/management of sports injuries.
Develop your taping, and massage techniques and rehabilitation skills in line with a sporting environment.
Develop your ability to prescribe and demonstrate rehabilitation programmes.
Develop your observation skills, communication and presentation/communication skills. and critical appraisal of the literature.
