Summary
This module helps students understand some of the key methods used by professional researchers who work in the area of International Relations; a subject that covers a whole gamut of different philosophical and methodological approaches. It provides hands-on experience in research skills relevant to undertaking independent projects in international relations, international history and politics, many of which will be useful transferable skills required for a successful career.
Target Students
Politics, History and International Relations (UNMC) Available to JYA/Erasmus students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 12 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 12 weeks
Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester
Assessment
- 60% Coursework 1: 1 x 3,000 word report: practical application of research methods
- 40% Coursework 2: 1 x 2000 word critical review

Educational Aims
To appreciate the relevance of understanding and explanation in social science and historical research;To understand the basic structure of social science and historical research methods and the fundamentals of research design;To familiarise themselves with the basic concepts of qualitative and quantitative analysis;Where appropriate, to develop empirical research questions, construct theoretical frameworks and formulate and test hypotheses using the techniques described above.Learning Outcomes

- recognize the strengths and weaknesses of different research methods in the study of international relations
- gain an understanding of the major approaches to conducting social science and historical research
- develop professional practical skills in the area of empirical research which is, in itself, of considerable value to employers,

- develop experience in working to deadlines IT Skills:
- The ability to deliver a professional, word processed document with accompanying bibliography and footnotes;
- The skill to draw information and documents from WebCT and conduct online research via online journals and elibrary functions
