Summary

A 10,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic agreed with the supervisor and the Director of Postgraduate Studies.

Target Students

MA students in Philosophy.

Classes

Regular supervision (on five occasions) during preparation of the dissertation. Breakdown of hours: Tutor-led - 5 hours; Dissertation preparation - 400 hours.

Educational Aims

Writing a dissertation provides an excellent opportunity to investigate a philosophical topic in some depth. It also gives a preliminary training in philosophical research skills. By the time you have completed your dissertation you should have a relatively deep knowledge of the area of philosophy on which you have chosen to write.

Learning Outcomes

In addition, you will have had the opportunity to extend your skills in
• Initiating, planning and completing a substantial independent project

•Researching the literature on a specific topic
 

•Presenting sustained and complex arguments in a clear way
 

•Coming to a reasoned judgement about a complex matter, where informed opinions differ
