Summary

As populations age, resistant diseases emerge and the uncertainty surrounding environmental impact on health increases, the Pharmaceutical Industry must evolve accordingly in order to address these challenges. In this module, students would learn the working framework in a modern pharmaceutical industry, including Current Good Manufacturing Processes (CGMP), Quality Control (Assurance), Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), ‘generic’ versus ‘innovator’. Students would also learn about current modalities related to the successful implementation of new chemical entities on the market, including clinical research, pharmacovigilance and post market surveillance. Many of the above concepts would have been introduced to the students in earlier modules so there is a premise for them to appreciate the limitations faced by the pharmaceutical industry in addressing current clinical issues. Students would then be introduced to current breakthroughs in the industry that would form the basis for activity in the future, including megatrends in the industry, the concepts of personalised medicines, big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
