Summary

The careers of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists can span more than 40 years and during that time there will be major
changes in their role and the types of medicines available to treat patients. This module aims to get you thinking about how patient
treatment could change over your careers. The module will prepare you for changes by asking you to think about how new medicines are
introduced and how healthcare professionals and scientists can keep their personal knowledge up-to-date.

Examples of topics within the module include:
The application of gene therapy and RNA therapeutics to medicine, including examples of successful approaches in clinical trials.

New developments in antibody technologies and biosimilars for therapeutics.

The potential of stem cell therapies to transform medicine.

We will use examples of ongoing clinical trials in spinal cord repair, retina regeneration and cardiac muscle repair.

The application of drug delivery to create targeted therapies for inflammatory diseases, cancer chemotherapy and needle-free vaccine delivery.
