Summary
This module provides:
An overview of natural products as a source for drug discovery;
Biological sources, chemical modification and synthesis, as well as formulation of natural products;
Extraction and chromatographic techniques for the isolation of natural products;
Analytical techniques for the characterisation of natural products and quality control of drug molecules.
Target Students
BSc Pharmaceutical Sciences; MSci Pharmaceutical Sciences with a Year in Industry (Year 3); Natural Science students
Assessment
- 50% Coursework: Essay (2,000-2,500 words).
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour): Written in person
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
The module provides an integrated approach to develop knowledge and understanding, as well as practical and professional transferrable skills, centred on natural products.Following a diminishing role in the past few decades, natural products are re-emerging as a source for drug discovery. You will focus on a topic that you find most interesting such as genomic and analytical techniques that supplement traditional methods of studying natural products, (semi)synthesis of natural products or advances in small molecule formulation.Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
A. Knowledge and understanding
A1 Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of principles relating to the chemical structure, synthesis, analysis and design of medicinal agents;
A6 Demonstrate and critically evaluate advanced scholarship in an area of pharmaceutical science.
B. Intellectual skills
B1 Critically appraise, analyse and summarise information, in particular in the context of pharmaceutical science;
B2 Undertake independent, reflective and self-directed learning in any area related to pharmaceutical science;
B4 Critically examine scientific data in areas related to pharmaceutical science.
D. Transferable/key skills
D1 Critically use information resources, including library and electronic sources;
D3 Communicate effectively in a variety of forms, including written, verbal and visual.
