Summary

Everybody experiences pain at some time and a pharmacist, whether working in a community or a hospital setting, encounters patients with pain several times each day. This module will provide you with sufficient background scientific information to be able to understand and describe the clinical use of commonly used analgesics and targets for novel analgesics. Where relevant, there will be opportunities to consider topics in an interprofessional learning environment. The module will discuss legal and ethical issues that contribute to appropriate and illicit analgesic use. The module covers key aspects of the Interprofessional Pain Curriculum Outline as proposed by the International Association for the Study of Pain. The module considers:
x Mechanisms of pain transduction and transmission.
x Relevant medicinal chemistry, and pharmacology and therapeutics of commonly used analgesics, including paracetamol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), local anaesthetics, opioids and 5-HT1-receptor agonists (triptans).
x Epidemiology and presentation of commonly encountered types of pain.
x Ethical issues that you will face when practising as a pharmacist.
This module will include patient involvement in teaching, a workshop session when patients  will talk to students in small groups. Students will rotate around several patients to see how pain impacts differently on their lives. Students will also see some patients with acute pain in the hospital.
