Summary
Every pharmacist will encounter some aspect of reproduction in their professional career. This module aims to make you consider not only the medication, therapies and appropriate treatments surrounding conception, contraception, and pregnancy but also the evolutionary drivers of reproduction and sexual attraction and the ethical and moral dilemmas that you as a pharmacist may face.
The topics covered in this module include:
The evolutionary basis of sex and aspects of sexually transmitted diseases.
The physiological basis of sexual attraction.
Conception, contraception and infertility, including ethical and moral considerations.
Pregnancy - testing and prescribing in.
Embryo development, sexual differentiation, foetal physiology and nutrition.
Breast-feeding and nursing.

Learning Outcomes
MLO 1: Demonstrate a thorough understanding in the evolutionary and development of human reproductive systems as well as the structure and function of the systems, the mechanisms of coitus, conception, parturition, breast feeding and the influence of sex hormones. (C3-Applying)
MLO2: Describe the physical chemistry and pharmaceutics of drug delivery, biology and physiology of STIs, developmental defects, embryogenesis and teratogens, various disorders of pregnancy and therapeutic options, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. (C2-Understanding)
MLO3: Display effective communication with patients about the management of common minor ailments in pregnancy, diet and lifestyle advice, drug use in lactation, safe and effective use of devices (e.g. pregnancy test kit, condoms), their prescribed treatment (e.g. the morning after pill), and available options in a way which promotes understanding. (A5-Characterisation)
MLO4: Recognise ethical dilemmas (e.g. cultural and religion) and respond in accordance with relevant codes of conduct surrounding conception, contraception, and pregnancy. (C4-Analysing)
